Postdoctoral position in systems neuroscience

My laboratory at the Janelia Farm Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
(http://www.hhmi.org/janelia/) is looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher. The lab’s focus
will be on circuit computations associated with sensory processing in the fruit fly brain.
Our goal is to understand how populations of neurons in the fly brain integrate multi-sensory
information and enable simple decision-making. We hope to establish causal links between ensemble
activity and behavior using a combination of experimental and computational techniques.
Experimentally, we employ a combination of single-cell electrophysiology and two-photon imaging
to record the activity of identified neurons in an intact fruit fly. We are also exploring two
major technical avenues in collaboration with others at Janelia and elsewhere: (i) electrophysiological
and optical recording from neurons in a behaving fruit fly, and (ii) high-resolution multi-cellular
recordings from fruit fly neurons. We expect to use a variety of linear and nonlinear computational
techniques for data analysis and modeling, as dictated by the needs of specific projects.
Your research would be both experimental and computational, and your track record should reflect
your ability and creativity in both areas. Requirements: Ph.D. in systems neuroscience, biophysics,
or a related area. If you have a Ph.D. in a different field, but are very keen to switch to
systems neuroscience, you should still apply. Big pluses would be: (i) independence and strong
motivation, (ii) a background in physics/engineering, (iii) significant experience in
electrophysiology and/or imaging, (iv) proficiency in scientific programming (e.g.,experience with
MATLAB), and (v) a passion for designing and/or tinkering with mechanical and electrical devices.
